Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT)

Most couples don’t have a problem with talking, they have a problem talking about feelings.

The fight can be about anything: The dishes, the in-laws, the finances, the sleep schedule. Underneath all of that is almost always something much more vulnerable that goes unsaid:

Do you still love me?
Can I count on you?
Am I safe with you?

Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) is built around feelings. If we can get to the core, primary feelings underneath the argument, you can begin to actually hear one another. Learning how to effectively identify each of your feelings and communicate from the heart is the key to rebuilding trust and intimacy.

How emotionally focused couples therapy looks in session

Most couples get stuck in what we call a dance or a cycle:
One partner pushes to talk, which can look like getting louder, or anxious, or critical.
The other partner pulls away, gets quiet, shuts down, or gets defensive.
During these tense moments, each partner is turning to opposing coping strategies which pushes them further apart, making the cycle worse.

In session, we slow that cycle way down. We look at your disagreements and get curious about every step of it, moment by moment. What did you feel right before you raised your voice? What happened in your body when they went quiet? Over time, you both get better at noticing the cycle as it's happening, then instead of falling into your old coping strategies, you begin to say the real, vulnerable truth.

Where emotionally focused couples therapy comes from

EFCT was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson and is one of the most researched approaches to couples therapy available. It is grounded in attachment theory, the study of how humans bond with the people they depend on. This is a structured, evidence-based approach with decades of outcome research behind it.

Who emotionally focused couples therapy helps most

Couples who've been together a while and feel like they keep having some version of the same fight in different words. Couples who've drifted into feeling more like roommates than partners. Couples navigating a rupture such as an affair or a betrayal. EFCT is for couples who are tired of brushing things under the rug, want to understand why they keep getting stuck, and actually take steps to change.

TL;DR: Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy helps you & your partner identify your conflict cycle, find the vulnerable feelings hiding underneath arguments, and learn how to say these feelings aloud to create longer lasting relationships.
